There are aspects of God's nature that can be known to us by an observation of the world and life around us (general revelation): order, purpose, regularity, predictability, beauty, personality, relationship, love, and balance. The other aspects of God's nature need to be revealed to us (special revelation): holiness, righteousness, goodness, etc.
> do we come to understand God on our own, and then find the religion that best describes that god, or do we find a religion that is "correct" one way or another, and blindly follow it?
We subscribe to a religion that has the best concord with truth, sense, the evidence we see, and best accords with reality. We don't just follow nature, and we don't blindly follow anything.
