Do we have an innate understanding of God's nature, or does religion dictate the nature of God to us?

For example, do we come to understand God on our own, and then find the religion that best describes that god, or do we find a religion that is "correct" one way or another, and blindly follow it?

There are aspects of God's nature that can be known to us by an observation of the world and life around us (general revelation): order, purpose, regularity, predictability, beauty, personality, relationship, love, and balance. The other aspects of God's nature need to be revealed to us (special revelation): holiness, righteousness, goodness, etc.

We subscribe to a religion that has the best concord with truth, sense, the evidence we see, and best accords with reality. We don't just follow nature, and we don't blindly follow anything.
